ABSTRACT

Background: The present study was done with an objective to evaluate the effect of melatonin as an antioxidant, with a focus on vitamin C, in patients suffering from periodontitis.Methods: This study was conducted jointly in the Department of Periodontics, Rural Dental College, and Department of Pharmacology, PIMS, Loni. Patients suffering from chronic periodontitis, of age between 18 to 65 years of either gender were included in the study, after obtaining a written informed consent. Patients were divided into three Groups. Group A included patients who underwent scaling and root planning (SRP) alone, Group B included patients who underwent SRP and supplemented with vitamin E 200 IU daily at night for 4 weeks. Group C included patients who underwent SRP and supplemented with tablet melatonin 3 mg daily at night for 4 weeks. Estimation of vitamin C was done on day 0, day 30, day 60 and day 90.Results: A total 240 patients were enrolled in the study, 80 in each group. Statistical analysis was done using ‘Z’ test of difference between two sample means for comparison of vitamin C among the three groups. It was observed that, there was a highly significant increase in mean values of vitamin C in group C when compared with group A and group B at 1st, 2nd and 3rd visits (p<0.01).Conclusions: Melatonin acts as an antioxidant in the patients of periodontitis which has positive effect on biochemical parameters of periodontitis, conferring a new facet to the management of periodontitis and an attempt to impede the disease progression.

ABSTRACT

The present study was aimed to study the effect of Sublingual Vitamin D3on Serum Vitamin D level in Vitamin D deficiency patients. This was a cross-sectional and interventional study. All the Vitamin D deficiency patients of age 18-60years and either gender, willing to participate in the study were included. Patients who had greater than 20 ng/ml were excluded from the study. The total number of participants in our study was 200, out of these 111 males and 89 females, the mean age in our study was 51.07 ± 7.39Yrs. All volunteers were given sublingual vitamin D3 (60,000IU) in six doses every fifteen days of follow up for 3 months. The subject’s serum 25(OH)D levels were estimated before and after treatment of sublingual vitamin D3. There was statistically significant difference in serum vitamin D3 level before 16.61±6.71 ng/ml and after 35.80±7.80 ng/ml after treatment with Sublingual Vitamin D3. Six doses of 60,000IU of Vitamin D3sublingual route having improved role of serum 25(OH)D levels in treatment of Vitamin D3deficiency patients

ABSTRACT

Background: Allergic rhinitis also called hay fever; it is a very common in India. Harmless exposing substances cause an allergic reaction. Allergic rhinitis is of the two types, one is the seasonal occurred with the change of seasons, second is the perennial means any time during the year.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study to determine the cost analysis allergic rhinitis drugs used in treatment of ENT OPD in a tertiary care teaching hospital, Kamothe, Navi Mumbai. The patients were interviewed; prescriptions were analyzed number of medicines prescribed.Results: Incidence of polypharmacy two drugs per prescriptions were prescribed 140 and three drugs per prescriptions 60. In the total number of 200 prescriptions, the cost of 43 prescriptions were in between 251-300 Indian rupees and 18 prescriptions were 301-350 Indian rupees. Patient knowledge about the drug use in this study, out of 200 pts 37% of allergic rhinitis patients knew the correct dosage of the prescribed drugs while 63% were not aware.Conclusions: Majority of the participants drugs were prescribed two to three drugs, per prescription cost was high because all the drugs prescribed by brand name and no drugs were prescribed by generic name. Improvement in knowledge about generic medicines is important factor to prefer generic medicine. Reduction in cost of drug will improve compliance.

ABSTRACT

Epilepsy is characterized by the presence of recurrent seizures. A seizure can be defined as “an episodic disturbance of movement, feeling, or consciousness caused by sudden synchronous, inappropriate, and excessive electrical discharges in the cerebral cortex”. One in every three patients with epilepsy is probable to be severely disabled. It is continuing this scenario as an attempt to develop potent and nontoxic anti-convulsant agents. Recently discovery of benzothiazepine derivatives as an anticonvulsant agent is significant area for research in medicinal chemistry as it is free from all side effects which is shown by a developed as an anticonvulsant agent. In this paper, we have presented results of 2D, and 3D docking poses studies of a series of 300 (Three series) molecules containing 1,5-benzothiazepine pharmacophore as anti-convulsant agents. Docking analysis was utilized to predict the mechanism of action of the designed derivatives for anticonvulsant potential. All the molecules exhibited binding score in the range of -82.61 to -118.25 kcal/mol. Most active molecules from Series 1, 2 and 3 exhibited hydrogen bond interactions with LEU282B, LEU282B and LEU282B. Also for the selected standard sodium phenytoin showed the hydrogen bond interaction with LYS637A. It was noted that the docking score of 1a to 10a, 101b to 110b and 201c to 210c was almost same as that of selected standard sodium phenytoin. Protein showed hydrogen bonding with all synthesized compound showed potential against the epilepsy with GABA nergic mechanism.

Postoperative patients, patients having night duties, drivers and those using heavy machinery, pregnant women, lactating mothers, patients with any clinically significant systemic disease and patients on any other drugs were excluded from the study. Patients were divided into three Groups. Group A included patients who underwent SRP (Scaling and Root Planning) alone, Group B included patients who underwent SRP & supplemented with Vitamin E 200 IU daily at night for 4 weeks. Group C included patients who underwent SRP & supplemented with tablet melatonin 3 mg daily at night for 4 weeks. Estimation of Malondialdehyde (MDA) for serum lipid peroxidation8, Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) was done on day 0, day 30, day 60 and day 90.Results: A total 240 patients were enrolled in the study. It was demonstrated that there was considerable oxidative stress in periodontitis patients, as established by high serum MDA levels, which was reduced significantly by melatonin reflecting its antioxidant potential. Pretreatment levels of SOD and GPx also were low, which were improved with the treatment of melatonin far better than with vitamin E.Conclusions: Melatonin acts as an antioxidant in the patients of periodontitis which has positive effect on biochemical parameters of periodontitis, conferring a new facet to the management of periodontitis and an attempt to impede the disease progression.

ABSTRACT

Introduction:Considering the immunity enhancing property of melatonin, a study on the evaluation of the effect of melatonin on the hematological parameters in patients suffering from Periodontitis.Methods:This study was con-ducted in the Department of Periodontics, Rural Dental College, Loni. Patients of chronic Periodontitis, of age be-tween 18 to 65 years of either gender ready to give informed consent to participate in the study were included. Postop-erative patients, patients having night duties, drivers and those using heavy machinery, pregnant women, lactating mothers, patients with any clinically significant systemic disease and patients on any other drugs were excluded from the study. Patients were divided into two Groups. Group B received scaling and root planning (SRP) and melatonin 3 mg per day were compared to Group A which received SRP only. The Total Leukocyte count, Differential Leukocyte count and Erythrocyte sedimentation rate of each patient was studied at a baseline, 1st(30 days) visit, 2nd(60 days) visit and 3rd(90 days) visit. Results:Both the groups consisted of 80 subjects each. Group A consisted of 71.25% male and 28.75% female patients. There were 56.25% male and 43.75% female patients in Group B. With respect to visit 3, the TLC was statistically lower in Group B. The neutrophil count of Group B was significantly lower during visit 3 as compared to Group A. The lymphocyte count of Group B was significantly lower than that of Group A dur-ing the visit 1, and also significantly higher during visit 3 on comparison with Group A. There was no statistically sig-nificant difference in the groups with respect to eosinophil and basophil count. The Monocyte count of Group B was statistically lower when compared to that of Group A. There was no statistically significant difference between ESR of Group A & Group B.Conclusions: It can be concluded that melatonin has a positive effect on TLC and differential count of patients of periodontitis, conferring a new facet to the management of periodontitis and an attempt to impede the disease progression.

ABSTRACT

In last few decades, though significant progress has been made in the treatment and control strategies of tubercular infections by introducing new diagnostic and monitoring tools and combination therapy, it still continues to be se-vere problem. The need of study was only because of there are many drugs in market to treat infection but most of the drugs are showing resistance because of the same it is difficult to treat the infection. In this study we chosen quinolone nucleus for study and over it. Thus with the aim of developing novel molecule with improved potency for treating Mycobacterium tuberculosisH37Rv strain infections and with decreased probability of developing drug re-sistance. Methodology:The synthesis of Quinolone derivatives, starting from substituted aniline and ethyl acetoace-tate, by conventional organic reaction and results of investigations of their anti-mycobacterial activity.Results: MICs of the synthesized compounds are compared with existing drugs Cytotoxicity. The substituted quinolones are synthe-sized by taking mixture of7-substituted-2-(3-chloro-2-oxopropyl) quinolin-4(1H)-one and different secondary amines. Many compounds have shown promising activity while some were inactive. Conclusion:It was found that Compound A1,A3,B1,B3,have shown promising anti tubercular activity whereas compound A2, A4,B2,B4were showing moderate anti tubercular activity against std. Streptomycin.

ABSTRACT

Background: India’s traffic problem over the years has been the root cause of many deaths. During an medical emer-gency like organ transplantation over long distances, the unsuitability of roads and highways hamper in the worst way possible. In a developing unplanned country like India, where lane discipline is an alien concept, emergency lanes won’t sustain as of now. Thus, for provision of better health services, a temporary emergency lane has been implemented in organ transplantation cases known as a ‘Green Corridor’. It is a special route with manual operation of street signals and traffic to avoid any hindrances that could come in the way of an ambulance. Aims and Objec-tives:To learn about the awareness, strategies and possibilities of Green Corridor in India. Material and Method:This was an interventional study by the undergraduate students of Rural Medical College, Pravara Institute of Medi-cal Sciences, Loni, Maharashtra. The study also included 350 Students and 150 Faculty members of Pravara Institute of Medical Sciences (Deemed University) and Practicing Doctors of Central Maharashtra were included in the survey. The survey conducted was in a pre and post-test format. Results:The study involved 500 participants out of which 135 were medical faculty and practicing doctor and 350 were students of Rural Medical College. The awareness among medical students about green corridor increased from 14% to 61%, while it went up to 71% from 26% in med-icalfacultyafterintervention.Willingnesstodonateorgansincreasedfrom57%to66%and78%to85%amongmed-icalstudentsandmedicalfaculty,respectively.Theparticipantsgavesuggestionstomakeavailableairambulance&emergency roads and increase awareness regarding green corridor. Conclusion: From the survey conducted, it can be perceived that there is a massive lack of awareness about Green Corridor as well as reluctance for organ dona-tion. Therefore, awareness should be created on a large scale so that no person is left oblivious. Even on a smaller scale, an implementation of the suggested strategies could make a massive difference in the present scenario regard-ing medical emergencies.
